WEITech: Advancing Digital Opportunities for Female Educators
The DreamOval Foundation, with the support of the Internet Society Foundation, is proud to unveil the Women Educators in Internet and Technology (WEITech) initiative. This program aims to address underemployment and the digital skill gap among female educators in Ghana, focusing on empowering trained but unemployed female teachers in the Greater Accra Region through specialised training in digital literacy, educational technology, and entrepreneurship.
Addressing Key Challenges
Female educators in Ghana face hurdles such as slow employment absorption rates into the Ghana Education Service and limited training in technology use for modern education. WEITech is designed to tackle these issues head-on by blending core digital and soft skills with hands-on collaborations alongside education technology organisations.
“WEITech is a targeted effort to ensure that women educators are equipped with practical skills for today’s digital education landscape. This initiative aligns with national goals of integrating technology into teaching while addressing challenges such as underemployment,” said Afua Oforiwaa Asiamah-Adjei, Executive Director of the DreamOval Foundation.
A Comprehensive Approach
Over eight months, participants will undergo training in:
- Digital Literacy & Tools for Education: Foundations in Technology for better teaching delivery.
- Content Creation & Online Branding: Developing and monetising online teaching programs.
- Entrepreneurship Skills: Identifying new career paths beyond traditional roles.
Additionally, each cohort will partner with Ed-Tech organisations to undertake capstone projects, culminating in the development of marketable online learning programs.
WEITech aims to foster long-term impact. By addressing the professional development needs of female educators, the program will drive transformative change in classrooms and communities alike, with ripple effects to be seen across the education sector.
This initiative highlights the DreamOval Foundation’s commitment to using technology as a catalyst for social change. Known for spearheading STEM-related programs, the Foundation continues its work to bridge educational and economic disparities in Ghana.
“We are committed to equipping underserved groups with tools and opportunities to excel in the digital economy, ensuring that no educator is left behind,” noted Keren Arkoh, Programs Lead at DreamOval Foundation.
Funded by the Internet Society Foundation, the program aligns with its SCILLS initiative, which leverages the power of the Internet to foster equitable access to better-paying jobs and improved educational outcomes globally.
“Our SCILLS program continues to demonstrate the Internet’s transformative power in fostering access to better-paying jobs, supporting entrepreneurs, and improving educational outcomes. By expanding into three new countries and fostering collaboration through regional gatherings, we have seen how grantees are driving meaningful change in their communities. Through adaptive digital literacy training, safe Internet practices, and partnerships with the business community, our projects are equipping individuals with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy,” said the Internet Society Foundation Senior Program Officer, Jenn Beard.
